Some General Instructions and Rules of Writing a Short Essay
A short essay is a short writing assignment on a topic. It is limited in length. It can have from 300 to 500 words. It should include the most important and interesting information on a selected topic. A simple short article can be regarded as a short essay.
Be attentive to your tutor’s assignment. If you are required a certain number of words, follow instructions of your teacher.
- Topic. Short essays can be written on any topic. You can choose a topic that is interesting for you. But you have to bear in mind that you word count is limited. Pick up several ideas which can present your point of view in the best way.
- Structure. A short essay must follow format requirements of any essay. It should contain three main parts: the introduction, body, and conclusions. The body should reveal your ideas on the topic with evidences and arguments.
- The thesis. Pay special attention to the thesis statement. It should be concise and clear so that you could develop the main idea of a short essay in a limited number of words. Place the thesis statement in the last sentence of the introduction.
- The readers. The purpose of short essays is to involve readers into a discussion of the topic. Remember, that you short essay will be read by somebody else. Your arguments should be convincing and accurate.
- References. You can use some quotes and references on literature sources in short essays. Format these references according to the citation style that you are required. You can find some guidelines on different citation styles on the internet. A short essay requires following common rules of a citation format.
